Introduction to Pharmacoepidemiology
Pharmacoepidemiologic studies, including drug utilization, safety and effectiveness studies, continue to gain importance in the post-approval setting because they provide “real-world” data on the benefit-risk of medicines. Pharmacoepidemiology and active safety surveillance have become an important component of risk management planning and, hence have broadened the methodological toolbox for post-authorization safety studies (PASS). Before selecting an appropriate research strategy and methodology, it is of utmost importance to identify evidence gaps and corresponding research questions to address these gaps.
