Description

This course provides an introduction to intersectionality and its application in public health policy, programs, research, and practice. Adapted from Health Canada’s CO 704: Introduction to Intersectionality—developed by the Health Canada SGBA Plus Centre of Excellence—the content has been tailored to reflect public health priorities and practice at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

This course supports learners in understanding how intersecting social identities and systems of power shape health outcomes and health inequities. While prior knowledge of Sex and Gender Based Analysis Plus (SGBA Plus) is beneficial, it is not required.

The course is delivered through a series of modules that build progressively. Early modules introduce key concepts and definitions related to intersectionality in health, while later modules provide opportunities to apply an intersectional lens through public health examples and case studies.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

1. Explain what intersectionality is and why it is important in public health

2. Evaluate whether an intersectional approach is being used in a policy, program, or practice

3. Identify and approach public health problems using an intersectional lens

4. Incorporate intersectionality into your own work

Through activities and reflection exercises, learners will develop practical skills to support more inclusive, responsive, and equitable public health decision making.
