Description
This winter, explore the Manager Learning Series, delivered in partnership with the Canada School of Public Service. These sessions are tailored to the federal government context, with a focus on practical applications and opportunities for interesting discussions.
The program offers three Cohorts, each containing four learning sessions. Participants must attend all four sessions of their chosen cohort to receive a certificate of completion. If you are aware prior to starting the program that you will be unable to attend any of the sessions, please register for another cohort.
Below are descriptions for the learning sessions you will find in every cohort.
Change Leadership
This session will define the benefits of moving beyond change management to a “change leadership” approach, using a transition model to understand, manage and overcome resistance and thereby more effectively seize opportunities that arise. It will also identify and explore specific actions that support successful, effective transitions.
Briefing Senior Decision-Makers
This session will provide an overview of strategic considerations related to audience, purpose and context for planning our briefings, as well as how we can develop our communication skills and situational awareness to adapt to changing circumstances in the briefing room. Effective briefing is essential for seeking important decisions and achieving meaningful outcomes, and requires continuous adaptation and practice as our strategic and operating contexts evolve.
Decision-Making in the Federal Government
This session will provide an overview of the actors, processes and key instruments involved in executive decision-making in the federal government, with a focus on the dynamics between the executive branch (the Prime Minister and Cabinet) and federal organizations. It includes discussion of the roles of central agencies as well as seeking decisions through Memoranda to Cabinet, Budget proposals, and Treasury Board Submissions.
Understanding and Exercising our Authorities
This session will provide an overview of the key sources of authorities in the Government of Canada, including legislative, policy and Cabinet authorities. It includes discussion on the importance of understanding these authorities in our roles as public servants, and how to exercise them in support of both effective stewardship and innovation.
