Description
In this learning session, we will cover the following:
- The importance of aiming for a grade 6 to 8 reading level for public text (or including a plain language summary).
- Writing directly to your reader.
- Using the active voice – put the subject first in a sentence.
- Using familiar words and shorter paragraphs.
- Avoiding technical terms when possible.
- Including the bottom-line up front.
- Using lists to note important points separate from the text.
- Using acronyms carefully.
- Testing your writing on others.
Workshop 1 is a recommended pre-requisite for this session. Workshop 1 is critical to staff understanding accessibility, and how their everyday actions affect people with different accommodation needs in a positive, or negative, way.
Please put a placeholder in your calendar. You will be sent a calendar invitation 1 week before the event.
** Accessibility notes:
All trainings are divided into 2 parts: pre-recorded (that we will watch as a group), and interactive.
We have sign language interpretation for the pre-recorded part, but not for the interactive session after. Please connect with the Accessibility Service Centre if you wish to request sign language services for break-out rooms.
