Description

Only open to members of PHAC's executive committee.

Description:

EC members represent PHAC in a variety of high-level dialogues, including with Indigenous partners, which requires an adaptation of communication styles and approaches. Reflection and awareness of communication styles is required, especially when federal public service leaders interact with Indigenous Partners where perceptions and interpretations of conversations and outcomes can be very different. This workshop looks at the principles for effective cross-cultural communication focusing on an Inuit context, how to communicate to be understood and to understand. Senior leaders will be able to explore how their personal communication style, the language of government, and the common communication styles used by Indigenous Peoples, can create a risk for miscommunication and be a barrier to relationship-building. While Inuit focused, the principles of cross-cultural communication can be applied for effective communication across distinction groups, or those with different cultural backgrounds.

Expected Outcomes:

It is expected that participants will have:

• a greater understanding of their own communication and confrontation style;

• be able to identify the communication and confrontation styles of others;

• be able to tailor their communication more effectively when talking to those who use a different communication style;

• be able to avoid common communication pitfalls when working with Indigenous Peoples; and

• basic skills for communicating effectively, and understanding communications with Inuit partners.
