Elder Vince Teddy is an Inuvialuk from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. He attended residential school from ages 6 to 13 and later completed high school in Inuvik. Elder Vince pursued higher education at the University of Alberta, motivated by his Elders’ advice to understand external influences on his people and land. Returning to Tuktoyaktuk in 1975, Elder Vince worked in various capacities, including as a radio operator and weatherman for petroleum companies, and as an elected leader in the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation. He played a key role in negotiating the land claims agreement in 1975-1976 and worked as a selfgovernment negotiator from 1996 to 2017. In 2017, Elder Vince became a trained Christian pastor and marriage commissioner. He was also awarded a medal of bravery for saving an Elder from thin ice in 2017. Elder Vince worked with the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories from 2020 to 2023 and continues to serve his community as an Elder and spiritual leader. Since November 2024, Elder Vince has been a valuable member of the NRCan’s Elder-in-Residence Program.
