Description
Facilitated by the First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC)
This engaging introductory session provides staff with a clear and accessible overview of the First Nations Principles of OCAP®—Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession—and their essential role in today’s public health environment. Designed for all employees, including those who may not work directly with Indigenous data, this session builds foundational awareness of ethical Indigenous data governance and its connection to reconciliation-driven public health practices.
Participants will explore what OCAP® represents, why it matters for federal public health work, and how it shapes respectful, culturally grounded relationships with First Nations partners. The session situates OCAP® within PHAC’s broader commitments to cultural humility, ethical collaboration, and Indigenous science competency.
By the end of the session, staff will have a solid understanding of Indigenous data sovereignty principles and a shared foundation for supporting safe, ethical, and respectful engagement with First Nations communities across PHAC’s work.
