Description

Join us for Heartbeat of the Drum, a hands-on Drum-Making Workshop offered during Indigenous Awareness Week (IAW). This meaningful experience brings together culture, creativity, and community as participants create their own hand drum while learning about its cultural significance.

In many Indigenous cultures, the drum is often described as the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Its rhythm connects people to the land, to ceremony, and to one another. Drums are considered living medicines, used in song, storytelling, and gatherings, and they carry deep spiritual and cultural meaning. Creating a drum is more than a craft—it is a personal and cultural experience rooted in respect, intention, and connection.

This workshop is led by David Finkle, an award-winning multi-instrumentalist from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in southern Ontario. Known as a Renaissance man, he is a sound engineer, storyteller, producer, and skilled drum maker. His work focuses on organic sound created through handmade traditional Indigenous instruments, including flutes, rattles, and drums.

Participants will be guided step-by-step in a supportive and engaging environment to create their own hand drum.
