Description
Recognition and representation of Native Americans in media and institutions should do more than “check the box.” It should inspire deeper, sustainable change. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Dr. Adrienne J. Keene, a Native American academic, writer, activist and member of the Cherokee Nation, will lead an impactful discussion on the history and implications of universities, organizations and media incorporating Native representations into their work — and how we can unite to move beyond “token” and symbolic characterizations. The founder of Native Appropriations, a blog on contemporary Indigenous issues, Dr. Keene will also share insights into how Native peoples are represented in today’s popular culture, fashion, music, film and media, and what we can do to move beyond stereotypes to capture the diverse richness of Native American heritage together.
