Join us as we celebrate the beauty, history and significance of ribbon skirts! January 4th marks national ribbon skirt day and SNIWWOC is inviting you to join us for a presentation and chat with Indigenous artists- Sam Mason and Aldeen Mason!

The experience of Isabella Kulak, a member of Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan, who was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt on a school formal wear day inspired the movement which resulted in the day being designated to provide an opportunity for everyone in Canada to recognize, learn about, and celebrate the importance of Indigenous traditions and expressions of culture. January 4th was chosen as it was on that day in 2021 that Isabella returned to her school after the incident.

Ribbon skirts and ribbon clothing have a long and varied history in Indigenous communities across turtle island and are a symbol of Indigenous pride shared amongst nations. This event will focus on our shared histories, our thoughts on the significance of ribbon skirts, how various nations celebrate ribbon clothing and conversations about modernizing Indigenous fashion. Come join us for a fun evening and learn about this beautiful history!
